Originally posted in August 2010. This is one of the old posts I've managed to partially recover from an archived version of AdamSooley.ca on archive.org. The beginning survived, but unfortunately most of the original Day 1 post didn't. I've cleaned up what remains and filled in a little context from Day 2 so this one can live on again.
Well, we hit the road today right after Jodi got off work and began our journey to Saratoga Springs, New York, to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with Crosby, Stills & Nash tomorrow night (August 27, 2010).
Ottawa to Saratoga is only about five hours away, but instead of doing the whole drive at once, we decided to leave a day early, take our time, enjoy the drive and stop for some pictures along the way.
Basically, we turned a five-hour drive to a concert into a two-day road trip.
Apparently we've been doing this sort of thing for a long time.
Ottawa to Tupper Lake
The plan for Day 1 was to leave Ottawa after work, cross into New York and make our way as far as Tupper Lake, where we'd spend the night.
From there we'd get up early the next morning and continue through the Adirondacks to Saratoga Springs.
I originally had a route map embedded in this post showing Ottawa to Tupper Lake as the first leg and Tupper Lake to Saratoga Springs as the second. Like quite a few things from the old versions of this website, that map seems to have disappeared somewhere during the past 16 years.
The good news is that Day 2 survived, so I at least know we made it to Tupper Lake.
That's reassuring.
Taking the Long Way to Tom Petty
There wasn't really any reason we needed two days to get to Saratoga. That was kind of the point.
Instead of leaving Ottawa the next morning and driving straight to the concert, we could take our time going through northern New York, stop whenever we wanted and actually enjoy getting there.
And judging by what I wrote the following day, that turned out to be a pretty good decision.
The drive through the Adirondacks was one of the things that stuck with me. In my original Day 2 post I described the back roads of New York State as some of the nicest country roads I'd ever driven, basically our own personal roller coaster through the mountains.
There was also a New York State Trooper involved the next day.
But we'll save that for Day 2.
Sixteen Years Later
This is another one of those posts I'm really glad I managed to find at least part of.
The original Day 1 page itself wasn't properly captured by the Internet Archive. All that's left is the opening paragraph, the title and evidence that there were four photos attached to it.
At the time, this was just a little blog update about Jodi and me driving to New York for a concert.
Nothing particularly historic.
Except now Tom Petty is gone, this trip was more than sixteen years ago, and that little paragraph is suddenly a record of something I'd really like to keep.
That's becoming one of my favourite parts of restoring these old posts.
A random update I typed into AdamSooley.ca in 2010 because I apparently thought the Internet needed to know where we were driving is now a little snapshot of our life at the time and this particular snapshot was the beginning of a pretty great weekend.
Tomorrow: Saratoga Springs, a B&B, a speeding ticket, Crosby, Stills & Nash and one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
