One of the fun things about having kids in sports is that eventually you find yourself doing things you never really expected to be doing. This morning was one of those times. I decided to take a try a making a couple of pump-up songs. Using some basic knowledge, a few catchy lines, some help from AI writing and a AI song producer, and ta-da we have success.
With Paige playing ringette for the Metcalfe Hornets and Sadie playing volleyball with Mission Recon, I figured both teams deserved something of their own to crank up before a game.
Metcalfe Hornets - Bring the Sting 🐝
Ringette is already fast, loud and just a little chaotic, especially if you know some of the moms in the team, so the song needed to match. Bring the Sting became a short, high-energy arena-style anthem built around the Hornets, their blue and yellow colours, and the idea of hitting the ice ready to go.
The goal wasn't exactly to write the next great Canadian sports anthem. It was to make something the girls could blast in the dressing room before a game and have some fun with.
If a song called Bring the Sting doesn't get a team called the Hornets fired up, I'm not sure what will.

Mission Recon Volleyball 🏐
Then, of course, Sadie's volleyball team needed one too.
For Mission Recon, I went with more of a modern pump-up track, big drums, bass, claps, chants and the kind of chorus that hopefully sounds good coming through a gym speaker before a match.
Volleyball has a completely different rhythm than ringette, so this one needed to feel more like a gym anthem: serve, pass, set, attack and celebrate.
Preferably lots of celebrating.

This is apparently a thing now
Neither song is going to win me a Juno award, that's probably safe to say but that's not really the point.
They're something fun made specifically for the kids and their teams. Years from now, they probably won't remember every score from every game or tournament, but hopefully they'll remember some of the little things around it, teammates, road trips, dressing rooms, tournaments and maybe that ridiculous song I made for the team.
So we now have Bring the Sting for the Metcalfe Hornets and a Mission Recon anthem for volleyball. Two kids, two sports, two pump-up songs.
I should probably stop here before I start making entrance music for myself when I walk into the office but I don't need to do that since Justin Timberlake already wrote I'm bringing sexy baby. 😂
