A note from 2026: I originally posted this after our first annual golf weekend in 2013. I've cleaned it up a little while bringing some of the older adamsooley.ca posts back, but otherwise I've left the story where it belongs — in 2013.
Our first annual guys' golf weekend is officially in the books.
There were 12 of us heading down to Smugglers Glen in the 1000 Islands for a weekend that involved golf, food, a few drinks and apparently not nearly enough sleep. Pretty much exactly what you'd expect.
Priorities first
Before heading down, we made the required stop at Costco. For beer. Obviously.
With that important bit of planning taken care of, we headed toward Smugglers Glen for the weekend.
The plan was two rounds of golf, staying at the motel and generally having a weekend away with the guys. Nothing too complicated.
Saturday
We got our first round of golf in on Saturday.
I'm not going to pretend this was some sort of highly competitive professional golf tournament. It wasn't. We were 12 guys playing golf for the weekend.
That probably tells you most of what you need to know.
After golf, we headed back, cleaned ourselves up and went for dinner.
And dinner was prime rib.
Which is already a pretty solid way to finish a day of golf.
After that, we headed back and spent the rest of the evening sitting around the fire.
There may have been a few drinks involved.
Maybe.
Sunday morning came quickly
The problem with sitting around a fire with 11 other guys late into the night is that eventually Sunday morning arrives.
And we had a 9:00 a.m. tee time.
That seemed like a considerably better idea when we booked it.
There wasn't a whole lot of sleep involved Saturday night, but everyone managed to get themselves moving and we headed back out for our second round.
Some of us may have been moving a little slower than others.
A pretty successful first year
For our first annual golf weekend, I'd call it a success.
Twelve guys.
Two rounds of golf.
Prime rib.
A fire.
A few drinks.
And a weekend away in the 1000 Islands.
Hard to complain about that.
Now we just have to do it again next year.
Looking back from 2026
Finding this old post while digging through archived versions of adamsooley.ca made me laugh.
There isn't some huge life lesson buried in it.
It was simply a weekend away with friends.
And that's exactly why I'm putting it back.
I've been finding a lot of these little posts while rebuilding the older parts of the site. At the time, they were just updates about whatever we happened to be doing.
More than a decade later, they're memories I'd mostly forgotten I'd written down.
Turns out boring the Internet one person at a time wasn't such a bad way to keep a diary.
